Itinerary
Day 1: Djibouti
We start by taking a short flight from Addis Ababa to Djibouti. Upon arrival, there will be time to venture out to Lac Assal, a crater lake in the Danakil Depression, 150 metres below sea level. It's a striking collection of landscapes that includes black lava fields, salty flats, and emerald waters. The lake is nestled within a volcanic crater and is surrounded by dramatic scenery. Its high salinity is a notable feature, making it one of the most saline bodies of water in the world — even higher than that of the Dead Sea. In the afternoon, we will drive back to Djibouti City.
Overnight: Djibouti City
Day 2: Whale Watching and Boat Cruise
Djibouti is well-known for being one of the best places to spot whale sharks in the wild. We will venture out to the Red Sea and try to swim with these magnificent creatures. After the encounter, we'll have the chance to spend the rest of the day at sea, snorkelling and cruising.
Overnight: Djibouti City
Day 3: Djibouti to Mogadishu
In the morning, we will take a final walk around the city before flying to Mogadishu. After arrival and security checks, we will enjoy the unique atmosphere of this coastal city.
Overnight: Mogadishu
Day 4: Mogadishu
We will begin our city exploration. We will visit the historic Mogadishu Lighthouse and Harbor, an area that played a significant role in the city's past. We will have lunch at a local restaurant, enjoying traditional Somali dishes such as fresh fish, camel meat, and vegetables. After lunch, we will take a guided walk through Hamarweyne Market, where we can experience the vibrant local trade and immerse ourselves in Somali culture. We will take a relaxing walk along the shore at Liido Beach. Our exploration continues with a visit to the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, an important landmark honoring those who fought for Somalia’s independence. The day concludes at Mogadishu’s lively fish market, where we can observe the bustling seafood trade and experience the energy of the local market.
Overnight: Mogadishu
Day 5: Fly to Hargeisa (Somaliland)
We will take an early morning flight to Hargeisa, arriving in Somaliland just in time for lunch. We will spend the evening wandering the city. At night, the market comes alive with stalls selling miswak (a natural toothbrush made from a twig) and khat, a chewable plant that acts as the local alcohol and tobacco combined.
Overnight: Hargeisa
Day 6: Hargeisa
We will take a break and explore the city, which is surely unlike any other you have visited. We will tour the main landmarks in the morning. Wandering the city in the afternoon and evening, we will also have the chance to mingle with locals, get a haircut, or simply see where the evening takes us.
Overnight: Hargeisa
Day 7: Fly Out
We will end the expedition in the morning. You can fly out via Addis Ababa or continue to our Ethiopia Expedition.

The best way to see not only the Mt Hagen festival but also the highlights of the PNG highlands. Safe, exciting, and lots of fun.
A spiritual and cultural-focussed expedition, not the typical style of other Wander trips, but I absolutely loved it. Bhutan is beautiful and this expedition was the best way to see it, the tricky visa and tour guide requirements were all handled and the itinerary gave the very best of the country in a few days. Northern India was equally serene and even as someone who hates hiking, having a great group to champion you along the way made it fun.
The best overland adventure you could ever ask for. Two weeks, 22 people, 6 cars, endless laughs. Sure, the days are long, and you definitely need to bring snacks, but it’s so much fun and the best way to see the parts of Africa that most people don’t go to! And it has everything - beach, nature, pool days, local communities, cities and middle-of-nowhere adventures. I’d even go as far as to say I’d do it again….. never say never!
My trip to Libya with you Wander Expeditions was unreal! Everything was super well organized, the group vibe was like family, and the guide kept things fun with stories and games along the way. Libya itself blew me away amazing people, amazing places, and good energy everywhere we went.
A pure pleasure celebrating with Alvaro and the gang - vibes unbeatable & can’t wait for the next reunion!
