Welcome to the Central American Expedition! This adventurous overland journey will take you through a diverse tapestry of cultures, landscapes, and experiences. Starting in the charming city of Antigua, Guatemala, we’ll embark on the roadtrip of a lifetime that will lead us through the heart of Central America. We have created the most efficient itinerary without sacrifizing the best experiences this region has to offer. Our convoy will be the best way to visit these 6 countries: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama. One of those Expeditions we won’t offer often. Don’t miss the chance!

itinerary

Day 0: Antigua (Guatemala)

  • We will meet in Antigua (Guatemala), the expedition officially starts here in the early morning on the following day. So make sure you arrive to Guatemala before 3rd April. To maximize your experience, we recommend arriving in Guatemala a few days early and have the opportunity to explore the area around Antigua before embarking on this overland Expedition!

Day 1: Antigua to San Salvador

  • We’ll start our journey very early in the morning  making our way to San Salvador. We will cross the border and if we have time we will explore the city.
  • Overnight in San Salvador.

Day 2: San Salvador to Choluteca (Honduras)

  • Today, we’ll cross the border into Honduras as we drive from San Salvador to Choluteca. Along the way, we’ll have the chance to immerse in the landscapes of this fascinating region.
  • Overnight in Choluteca

Day 3: Choluteca to Nicaragua

  • Our journey continues as we make our way to the charming city of Leon in Nicaragua. After exploring Leon, we’ll drive to Managua and then head to Granada, known for its colonial architecture and picturesque surroundings.

Day 4: Volcan Masaya

  • Today’s adventure takes us to Volcan Masaya, where we can witness the power of a live volcano.
  • Afterward, we’ll continue to the laid-back coastal town of San Juan del Sur, where you’ll spend the night.
  • Overnight in San Juan del Sur.

Day 5: San Juan del Sur – Free Day

  • Enjoy a free day in San Juan del Sur to relax on the beach, explore the town, or take part in various water activities. It’s a day to unwind and soak in the beauty of the Pacific coast.

Day 6: Guanacaste National Park

  • Today, we’ll cross into Costa Rica, visiting Guanacaste National Park before continuing our journey to Rio Celeste. This park is known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant blue river.

Day 7: Rio Celeste to Limon

  • As we leave Rio Celeste behind, we’ll head to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and reach the vibrant city of Limon. Explore the local culture and enjoy the coastal atmosphere.

Day 8: Limon to Bocas del Toro

  • Today, we’ll cross the border into Panama and make our way to the stunning Bocas del Toro archipelago. This tropical paradise is known for its crystal-clear waters and lush landscapes.
  • Overnight in Bocas del Toro.

Day 9: Bocas del Toro – Free Day

  • Take advantage of a free day in Bocas del Toro to relax on the beautiful beaches, explore the islands, or engage in water sports and activities.

Day 10: Bocas del Toro to Santa Clara

  • Leaving Bocas del Toro, we’ll travel to Santa Clara, a charming destination that offers a mix of natural beauty and local culture.

Day 11: Santa Clara to Panama Canal, Portobelo and San Lorenzo

  • Today, we’ll journey to the world-famous Panama Canal, a marvel of engineering.
  • Afterward, we’ll visit the historic sites of Portobelo and San Lorenzo before reaching Panama City.

Day 12: Departure from Panama City

  • Our Central American expedition comes to an end as you prepare to depart from Panama City.

FAQ

These 6 countries are generally visa free or on arrival for most nationalities. However, if your passport requires a visa, we can help you navigate the process and offer support when you apply for it.
Wander Expedition doesn’t book flights for you and is ultimately not responsible for your flight connection, but we can offer guidance and support when you research the best options for you. We recommend you fly at least a day early into Guatemala, on April 2nd. You can fly out of Panama on April 14th
Central America is one of the most adventurous regions in the Americas and traveling in a group won’t just make it more fun, but also, safer than going alone. Most of the risks in these countries are mitigated by the higher the number of people that you are with.
This is an overlanding Expedition for those interested in the adventurous countries of Central America. We’ll roadtrip across 6 countries and make it easy for you to explore them all with their different nuances.
