Discover the timeless allure of Eritrea and Djibouti. Asmara's Art Deco gems transport you to a bygone era. Dive into Massawa's cultural fusion, camp on a serene Red Sea island, witness majestic whales in Djibouti, and embrace the rugged beauty of Lac Assal. These hidden gems of the Horn of Africa are calling and it might be a one time only Expedition!

Itinerary

Day 1: Asmara

  • After meet & greet at the airport, we start our Expedition with a city tour of Asmara, the Eritrean capital, a city that seems to be frozen in time.  It's often called as "Piccola Roma" (Little Rome) and observes the most shining collection of Art Deco architectural wonders such as the: Roman Catholic cathedral, St Mary Coptic church, Al Khulafa al Rashedin, Market (vegetable, spices, souvenir,
medeber), National Museum and the Fiat Tagliero building, to name a few.
  • Overnight in Asmara.

Day 2: Massawa.

  • After a hearty breakfast, we'll embark on a scenic drive downhill via the Ghinda road, leading to the picturesque port city of Massawa. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery and the exotic flora and fauna that make up this lush "Green Belt" area. We'll continue our enjoyable drive, arriving in Massawa.
  • In the afternoon, explore the city of Massawa often referred to as the "City of Islands" and the "Pearl of the Red Sea," Massawa has been a vital port for centuries. Its Turkish-style architecture, charming shopping arcades, magnificent mosques, and delectable seafood await your discovery. Massawa offers something for everyone, with pristine beaches and world-class swimming just a short distance from the city center.
  • Overnight in Massawa.

Day 3: Red Sea, Disse Island.

  • Get ready for a water adventure! We'll hop on a fast boat to Disse Island, where you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and even camping on the beach. It's a peaceful island, surrounded by the Red Sea.
  • Overnight camping in Disse Island.

Day 4: Massawa & Asmara.

  • After a good breakfast on the island, we'll head back to Massawa, and from there, we'll return to Asmara, where you'll spend the night.

Day 5: Flight to Djibouti

  • Today we fly between Asmara and Djibouti. Flight departs Asmara at 12:40pm so we still have time for a last morning walk around this city full of charm.
  • After a short layover in Addis, we land in Djibouti around 5.30pm, with enough time to explore the capital before dinner.
  • Overnight in Djibouti City.

Day 6: Whale watching and boat cruise

  • Djibouti is well-known for being a great place to spot whale sharks in the wild. February is still the season, so we will venture out to the Red Sea and try to swim with these majestic creatures.
  • After the encounter, we'll have a chance to spend the rest of the day at Sea, snorkelling and cruising.
  • Afternoon and overnight in Djibouti City.

Day 7: Lac Assal.

  • In the morning, we'll venture out in 4WD to Lac Assal, a crater lake in the Danakil Depression at 150 below sea level. It's a stunning collection of landscapes that includes black lava fields, salty flats and emerald waters.
  • Overnight in Djibouti City.

Day 8: Free time, fly out.

  • After breakfast, the worst moment of every Expedition: we say goodbye. The Expedition is finished and we fly out.

Absolutely unforgettable. Traveling through Central America was so much more than a trip. It was an experience built around connection and shared adventure. From volcano hikes to pyramid sunrises, every destination was stunning, but what truly made it special was the group I shared it with. I’ve come home with a head full of memories, several crazy stories, and a few friends for life.

The best introduction to this part of the world. West Africa is sometimes called "Africa for beginners". I can see it. Mostly laid back, beautiful coast, incredible sightseeing and smiley locals. Add in the mix the Vodun culture, the colourful dances and thrilling rituals and you have an adventure to remember. Benin has quickly rose to being one of my favourite countries and the expedition family some of my favourite people.

History, history, history! Wow, is all I can say. Libya's recent history has created an isolation from tourism, and made this a relatively untouched Mediterranean gem. The Roman and Phoenician ruins are just mind-blowing. The trip out to the Algerian-Libyan border of The Sahara Desert is long, but well worth it to see Ghadames. Definitely say, "Yes"!

What a hilarious group of explorers who made the long drives fun! The guys were great dancers, too, when faced with rejection by the local females at the bar/dance hall, they had no problem dancing with themselves! Music, song and "car dancing" kept the mood going the whole time. Views were outstanding in The Pamir region.

I really cherish the people I met on my 1st "YES", I said to Afghanistan. It was a small group of very empathetic and adventurous people. We were all nervous at first, until we settled into the pace of our Expedition led by Elena. The people, the lead, the guide and drivers, and the shop keepers were so welcoming and professional. Kindest and most generous people I've met in recent years. I highly recommend everyone visit Afghanistan.
