Lhasa to Kathmandu Through Everest Base Camp

 

This summer, embark on a journey across the Roof of the World, exploring the majestic landscapes and cultural treasures of Tibet.

From the vibrant streets of Lhasa to the serene beauty of Yamdrok Lake, and onward to the awe-inspiring Everest Base Camp, each day promises new adventures. This expedition offers a harmonious blend of cultural immersion and natural wonders, including visits to sacred monasteries, bustling bazaars, and the breathtaking Himalayan peaks.

An Itinerary carefully designed for our Wander Fam seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, this journey takes you through the heart of Tibetan culture and onto Nepal’s lush valleys. Whether it’s marveling at the iconic Potala Palace, witnessing the grandeur of Mount Everest, or experiencing the unique traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, this itinerary is sure to leave you with memories that last a lifetime.

Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa (3,650m)

  • Welcome to Tibet! Upon arrival in Lhasa from mainland China, we will transfer you to the hotel. In the afternoon, you will visit the iconic Potala Palace, a legendary structure built atop a single hill by King Songtsen Gampo, which symbolizes Tibet’s cultural and historical essence.  Lhasa’s breathtaking views and peaceful ambiance offer a perfect start to your journey.
  • Overnight: Hotel in Lhasa.

Day 2: Lhasa Sightseeing

  • We will start our  exploration of Lhasa with by exploring the Jokhang Temple, a revered religious site located in the heart of old Lhasa. It houses the golden Shakyamuni Buddha statue, a significant relic brought as a gift by Chinese Princess Wen Cheng during her marriage to King Songtsen Gampo. Next, stroll through the vibrant Barkhor Market, the cultural and social hub of Lhasa. In the afternoon, visit either Sera Monastery or Drepung Monastery, both offering unique insights into Tibetan monastic life.
  • Overnight: Hotel in Lhasa.

Day 3: Scenic Drive to Gyantse (3,950m) & Xigatse (3,900m)

  • We will embark early in the mroning on a journey through the dramatic landscapes of Tibet. Cross the high mountain passes while enjoying spectacular views of Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s holiest lakes. Stop in Gyantse to visit the Kumbum Stupa and Pholkor Monastery, known for their architectural and religious significance. Then we will continue to Xigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet.
  • Overnight: Hotel in Xigatse.

Day 4: Xigatse to Rongbuk Monastery (5,000m)

  • We will start the day with a visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, adorned with exquisite murals and sculptures. Then, journey to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world, where you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of Mount Everest’s North Face. If we have time in our way we wills top by the Shakya Monastery.
  • Overnight: Guesthouse in Rongbuk.

Day 5: Everest Base Camp (5,200m)

  • Early in the morning we will visit the Everest Base Camp. Marvel at the grandeur of Mount Everest, with its imposing North Face.  We will spend the day exploring the EBC and Rongbuk areas, soaking in the majestic beauty
    of the Himalayas.
  • Overnight: Guesthouse in Rongbuk.

Day 6: Drive to Kerung (Gyirong)

  • After breakfast, drive to Kerung, passing through Tingri along the way. Admire the striking vistas of towering peaks, including Mt. Shishapangma (8,212m) and Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201m). This scenic drive offers a perfect blend of rugged mountain landscapes and serene Tibetan villages.
  • Overnight at a guesthouse in Kerung.

Day 7: Drive to Kathmandu

  • Today we will drive to the Nepal border and after completing border formalities at Kerung (Gyirong), cross into Nepal and begin the scenic descent from the Tibetan plateau to Nepal’s lush green valleys. The changing landscapes provide a stunning conclusion to your adventure.
  • Overnight: Hotel in Kathmandu

Day 8: Fly Out

  • It’s the saddest moment on any Expedition: we say goodbye until the next time we see each other!

You must have a visa to visit mainland China. Please check the requirements for your passport. We will support you during the process.
Wander Expedition does not handle flight bookings on your behalf and is not ultimately responsible for your flight connection. However, we can provide guidance and support as you research the best options for your journey. Our Expedition will commence flying to Lhasa and conclude in Kathmandu (Capital of Nepal).
We will always be accompanied by an expert local crew, ensuring that we can interact with locals, enjoy the nature and have the best possible experience.
This Expedition is designed for everyone seeking a fun time, an exploration of off-the-beaten-path destinations, the opportunity to make new travel friends, and create unforgettable travel stories. We crafted this itinerary to showcase the diverse landscapes of Tibet, making it the perfect unique off-the-grid adventure.
Hiking boots (or comfortable shoes), sandals, rain jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, hiking backpack, insect repellent, solar charger, power bank, antiseptic, hat, water bottle, warm jacket, and a headlamp (sleeping bag is optional).
